The National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Musiliu Akinsanya, on Tuesday returned to the union’s national secretariat in Abuja under the escort of soldiers and police officers after a rival faction earlier took control of the premises.
In a video shared by Television Continental (TVC) on X, MC Oluomo was seen inspecting parts of the building allegedly damaged during the attempted takeover of the office.
The development followed Monday’s invasion of the secretariat by a faction loyal to Tajudeen Baruwa, who claimed his group acted based on court rulings he said supported his leadership position.
Speaking to journalists after his faction occupied the facility, Baruwa insisted the action was carried out in compliance with legal directives.
“Their body language has not been encouraging despite repeated assurance that we are not going back to foment trouble. We are a law-abiding union whose only mission is to reclaim what belongs to us,” he said.
Baruwa stated that his group had formally written to the police and attached copies of court judgments to justify their move, but expressed dissatisfaction with the response of security authorities.
“Our return after two years is to occupy our office after obtaining judgments at both the lower court and the Appeal Court. They refused to obey the court orders despite waiting for about two years. We resumed today without violence,” he added.
He also alleged that one of his supporters was injured during the incident and is currently receiving treatment in the hospital, while maintaining that his faction remains open to reconciliation.
Reacting to the situation, MC Oluomo described the incident as a forceful takeover, stressing that legal proceedings over the leadership dispute are still ongoing.
In a statement, he said he was not listed as a defendant in the court judgment cited by Baruwa and that the ruling had already been challenged with a stay of execution secured.
“The National President wishes to inform members of the union and the general public that he was not a defendant in the purported judgment.
The judgment has been appealed and a stay of execution entered.
Alhaji Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya remains the National President of NURTW,” the statement read.
He urged union members to remain calm and act within the law while the leadership crisis continues to unfold.
