Ogun NUJ @ 50: Journalists Unveil Golden Jubilee Logo, Roll Out Week-Long Festivities

ABEOKUTA — The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has unveiled the official logo for its Golden Jubilee, unveiling a packed week-long programme to celebrate 50 years of journalism, service and media development in the state.

The celebration, scheduled for October 26 to November 1, 2026, will bring together veteran journalists, practising media professionals, stakeholders and members of the public in a week of sports, advocacy, music, intellectual engagement, community outreach, awards and thanksgiving.

Held alongside the council’s annual Press Week, the Golden Jubilee is themed: “Ogun NUJ @ 50: Truth, Trust and the Press – Protecting Democratic Choice and Rebuilding Public Confidence in Journalism.”

The theme underscores the council’s focus on the media’s critical role in defending democratic values, promoting accountability and restoring public confidence in journalism at a time of rapid changes in the information ecosystem.

The anniversary logo was unveiled by the Council Chairman, Comrade Akinwale Olanrewaju, alongside media veterans and other stakeholders during the council’s August Congress.

Seven Days of Activities

The festivities will kick off on Monday, October 26, with the Grand Opening and Inter-Chapel Sports and Games Competition at Iwe Irohin. Activities are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

On Tuesday, October 27, journalists will take to the streets for a Jubilee Walk for Press Freedom, moving from Iwe Irohin to the MKO Sports Arena.

The walk will be followed by a novelty football clash between NUJ FC and NBA FC, adding sports, fitness and camaraderie to the anniversary celebrations.

Wednesday, October 28, will be dedicated to entertainment and creativity, featuring the Jubilee Music Concert and Chapel Variety Day at Iwe Irohin from 11:00 a.m.

The intellectual and heritage dimension of the celebration will take centre stage on Thursday, October 29, with the Anniversary Lecture, commissioning of Golden Jubilee Legacy Projects and a special Veterans’ Night.

The council will take the celebration beyond the newsroom on Friday, October 30, with a Village Outreach and Thanksgiving Juma’at Service at Opeji.

The high point of the week comes on Saturday, October 31, with the Grand Finale and Awards Ceremony, scheduled for noon.

The celebration will officially draw to a close on Sunday, November 1, with a Church Thanksgiving Service at V.L.B.C. beginning at 8:00 a.m.

The Golden Jubilee is expected to provide a major platform to celebrate the pioneers who laid the foundation for journalism in Ogun State, honour media veterans and recognise individuals and institutions that have contributed to the growth of the profession.

Beyond the festivities, the council said the anniversary would offer an opportunity to look back on five decades of journalism in Ogun State while charting a stronger and more trusted future for the press.

With its focus on truth, trust, press freedom and democratic choice, the Ogun NUJ @ 50 celebration is poised to be both a commemoration of the past and a renewed call for responsible, courageous and credible journalism in the years ahead.
