The FME-TVET Vocational Skills Programme Gains Momentum with Cohort 2 as Ogun State Centre Managers Receive Training on TVET Standards and Compliance

By Ọmọsọla Olumide

Ogun State has organised a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Centre Managers’ Capacity-Building Training for the implementation of Cohort 2 of the programme.

The training, held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Aerovessel School, Sango-Ota, brought together TVET centre managers and stakeholders across Ogun State to strengthen the implementation of the Federal Ministry of Education’s TVET initiative.

Speaking at the event, the Ogun State Programme Monitoring Officer (PMO), Alhaja Islamiyah Adetunji, said the training was organised to improve centre managers’ understanding of TVET implementation requirements, enhance compliance with NBTE standards and quality assurance processes, and clarify procedures relating to carrying capacity, trade expansion, and centre relocation.

She also noted that the training provided updates on NELFUND stipend administration, beneficiary management, biometric attendance compliance, and reporting requirements for Cohort 2..

Mrs. Meshuoye Omobola of Shelter Works Initiative, Abeokuta, commended the organisers and the Ogun State PMO for the initiative, expressing confidence that Cohort 2 would record great success. She lamented the declining dignity of labour among some youths and urged them to embrace the opportunity to empower themselves through skill acquisition rather than neglecting the programme.

The Centre Manager of Aerovessel, Hon. Bolaji Kelani, encouraged youths to take advantage of the programme, stating that awareness campaigns had been intensified through newspapers, radio announcements, social media, and Community Development Associations (CDAs).

According to him, the programme will help reduce unemployment and lessen dependence on expatriates occupying lucrative technical positions in Nigeria.

He also appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the World Bank for supporting the initiative, noting that the programme is internationally recognised and that the certificates obtained can be used both within and outside Nigeria.

Kelani further explained that quality assurance assessors are engaged to ensure effective communication between trainers and trainees, regardless of language barriers or literacy levels, including the use of indigenous languages where necessary.

He stressed that the programme would help youths leave the streets, reduce crime, and become productive members of society.

Engr. Dr. Jokojeje also advised youths to embrace the programme, describing it as a laudable initiative capable of reducing unemployment and increasing youths’ sense of belonging. He called for wider publicity and grassroots sensitisation to ensure greater awareness and participation.

Layi Ade Fadekemi, CEO of Fadex Concept, who specialises in leather works and fabric bag production, said the programme helps build practical skills among youths beyond classroom theory. She urged participants to focus on the long-term value of the skills and internationally recognised certificates rather than the monetary stipends attached to the programme.

Similarly, Abdulateef Adeola Ajetunmobi stressed that proper implementation of the initiative would help reduce crime. He also advocated the use of local languages during training, citing examples from countries such as China, India, and other Asian nations.

Engr. Aina Saidi, Internal Quality Manager at Masoro Technical College, stated that the programme exposes both trainers and trainees to global best practices. He called for more regular skills-training programmes and advised that loopholes, especially issues relating to learners’ proximity to training centres, should be addressed.

Also speaking, Odeyemi Folashade, Academic Director, Curriculum Developer, and Internal Quality Assessor (IQA), expressed satisfaction with the gathering of centre managers to refine and improve programme implementation.

She encouraged poor and vulnerable youths to take advantage of the government-sponsored initiative, assuring them that the programme provides stress-free access to internationally recognised certifications capable of improving livelihoods both locally and internationally.

She further assured participants that the TVET programme is sustainable and would continue to grow stronger through improved yearly implementation and the emergence of more competent Nigerian professionals.

All TVET centre managers across Ogun State were present at the training to ensure the effective implementation of the programme.
