Benin Technical College (BTC) on Wednesday emerged champions of the Edo State Governor’s Cup after defeating a determined Agba Grammar School side 4-3 on penalties in a thrilling final at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
The victory marked a triumphant end to BTC’s campaign, which began in 2025, as the school once again stamped its authority on school football in the state.
BTC dominated the early exchanges and deservedly took the lead in the first half after sustained attacking pressure unsettled their opponents.
However, Agba Grammar School returned stronger after the break and grabbed an equaliser early in the second half to set up a tense and highly competitive finale.
Despite several attacking moves and scoring opportunities created by BTC in search of a late winner, Agba Grammar School’s defence stood firm, forcing the pulsating encounter into a penalty shootout.
Showing remarkable composure under pressure, the BTC players converted their spot-kicks clinically to edge their opponents 4-3 and spark wild celebrations among students, officials and supporters at the stadium.
National President and Lagos State Chairman, Mr Ikponmwosa Osunbo, alongside Sir Ralph J. Karieren, joined the school principal, Mr Friday Izedonmwen, and the State Governor’s Cup-winning coach, Sharon Ekhiwere, at the prestigious Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium to cheer the students to victory.
Speaking after the victory, members of the BTC contingent described the triumph as the reward for months of hard work, discipline and determination.
They praised the players for their resilience and fighting spirit throughout the competition, particularly in the final where the team had to battle back emotionally after conceding the equaliser.
The latest success means Benin Technical College has now won two Governor’s Cup titles in four years, further reinforcing their reputation as one of the dominant forces in male football within the state’s secondary school sports scene.
The victory also highlighted the growing standard of grassroots football development in Edo State, with both finalists displaying skill, discipline and tactical organisation throughout the encounter.
Fans at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium were treated to an entertaining final filled with excitement, tension and dramatic moments before BTC eventually emerged victorious to lift the coveted trophy.
