L-R Olalekan Gbenga Oso and Comrade Wale NUJ Chairman Ogun State Chapter
UK-based philanthropist Olalekan Gbenga Oso has provided free medical services to residents of Ota, Ogun State, as part of activities marking his birthday.
The outreach addressed pressing community challenges such as poverty, malnutrition, limited access to healthcare, and rising medical costs. Beneficiaries received free consultations, treatment, medications, and eyeglasses—services many would otherwise struggle to afford.
Speaking at the event, Oso said his humanitarian drive was inspired by repeated visits to Nigeria after spending over a decade in the United Kingdom.
“Seeing people struggle with preventable health issues, especially poor eyesight, motivated me to act. Marking my birthday this way gives me fulfilment,” he said.
He disclosed plans to formalise his efforts through a non-governmental organisation focused on youth empowerment and support for vulnerable groups in Abeokuta and neighbouring communities.
As part of this vision, construction has begun on an ICT centre aimed at equipping young people with practical, income-generating skills.
Oso also announced an empowerment scheme targeting about 50 beneficiaries per cycle. The programme, to run quarterly, will provide ₦600,000 to each participant to support small-scale enterprises.
He called for partnerships with individuals, corporate bodies, and government agencies to expand the initiative’s reach.
Also present was Olalekan Olambiwonninu Irorunola, CEO of Africargo, who commended Oso’s commitment to humanitarian service, describing him as consistent and deeply compassionate.
For many residents, the outreach offered more than medical relief—it provided hope and a reminder of the impact of community-driven support.
