From Reluctant King to City Builder: Olota’s Vision for a New Ota |Omohglobalnews

The Olota of Ota, Oba Professor Adeyemi Kabir Obalanlege, Ekun 2 has reaffirmed his resolve to transform the historic town of Ota into a model city within Awori land and across Nigeria—an ambition shaped by a personal journey he never expected to take.

The monarch made this known during an interactive session with members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Ogun West Independent Chapel, held at his palace in Ota.
Speaking candidly, Oba Obalanlege revealed that becoming a traditional ruler was never part of his life plan, noting that his aspirations were originally rooted in academia. “I never thought I would become a king in my lifetime,” he said, underscoring the unlikely path that has now placed him at the forefront of Ota’s development.

He recounted his initial reluctance to join the race for the throne, having supported his uncle, who had earlier shown interest in the stool. However, sustained pressure from family members who believed in his leadership qualities eventually led him to reconsider. With the consent of his uncle and family, he later formally declared his intention to contest.

The monarch further disclosed that his wife initially opposed his emergence as king, prompting him to temporarily relocate to the United Kingdom, where he had secured employment, in a bid to avoid the responsibility. He noted, however, that she later withdrew her opposition after being persuaded by traditional beliefs surrounding the consequences of rejecting a royal call.

Now reigning as Ekun II, Oba Obalanlege said his acceptance of the throne was ultimately driven by a desire to serve his people and contribute meaningfully to the growth of Ota. He stressed that his administration is focused on promoting good governance, accelerating development, and repositioning the town as a modern and attractive urban centre.

“My decisions are geared towards making Ota an enviable city and ensuring that I rule well,” he stated.

Highlighting the importance of service and merit within traditional institutions, the monarch cited the installation of Gbenga Oso, a native of Tigbo-Ota, as the Asiwaju of Boba Selu of Ota, as well as his recognition as Asiwaju Bobaselu of Owu land. He explained that the honour was based not on wealth but on Oso’s generosity, integrity, and consistent commitment to community development both at home and in the diaspora.
Oba Obalanlege used the example to underscore the values of selfless service, integrity, and community impact as the true benchmarks for leadership and recognition.

Widely regarded as part of a new generation of traditional rulers blending academic exposure with progressive governance, the Olota reiterated his commitment to fostering unity, driving sustainable development, and preserving the rich cultural heritage of Ota while embracing modernity.
