Akinpelu Assures Continuity, Enhanced Representation Ahead of Senate Bid |Omohglobalnews

By Ọmọsọla Olumide

A former lawmaker representing Ado-Ota State Constituency I, Hon. Aina Nurudeen Akinpelu, has declared his intention to vie for the Senate, describing the position as a “sacred seat” reserved for capable and articulate leaders.

Akinpelu made this known during a media chat with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, Ogun West Independent Chapel, where he outlined his vision and readiness for higher legislative responsibility.

He commended past leaders for their contributions to the development of Ogun West and specifically appreciated the current senator, Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi), for sustaining and building on the legacy of his predecessors. According to him, taking over such a well-performing office requires responsibility, noting that there must be no gaps or setbacks in sustaining the progress already achieved.

Describing the task ahead as herculean, Akinpelu expressed confidence in his ability not only to maintain the current tempo but also to improve on it. The aspirant highlighted his track record as a former principal officer in the Ogun State House of Assembly, where he served as Chairman of the House Committee on Health and later on Information and Strategy.

He stated that his leadership roles enabled him to contribute significantly to the transformation of the health sector and the effective dissemination of government policies, adding that his experience across various parastatals has adequately prepared him for the Senate.

The aspirant emphasized that he meets all constitutional requirements to serve as a senator, while describing himself as “a small body with a big engine,” reflecting his energy and determination to deliver impactful representation.

He further stressed the importance of youth inclusion in governance, advocating for the promotion of younger, competent individuals who can contribute meaningfully to nation-building.

Drawing from his background as a lawyer and seasoned legislator, he assured constituents of effective representation marked by boldness, active participation in debates, and quality lawmaking. He criticized passive lawmakers who fail to contribute meaningfully, noting that true legislative vibrancy lies in active engagement and advocacy.

On governance, he pledged to ensure that the dividends of democracy reach the grassroots through adequate budgetary allocations and people-oriented projects in his constituency.

Speaking further on his legislative agenda, Akinpelu highlighted the key responsibilities of a senator, including lawmaking and oversight functions. He added that, if elected, he would focus on laws addressing trans-border issues, transportation, and the promotion of a sustainable maintenance culture in public infrastructure.

He concluded by stating that stepping into a position currently occupied by a performing senator demands excellence, stressing that the choice is either to surpass the existing standard or fall short.
