At a media chat organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun West Independent Chapel in Ota, Engr. Jamiu Yakubu Ajayi, an aspirant for the Ogun State House of Assembly under the All Progressives Congress (APC), declared that his ambition is anchored on policy-driven governance and grassroots development.
Ajayi, a former Chairman of Iju Aitan-Ilogbo LCDA, emphasised that effective leadership must be guided by well-structured policies, noting that formulation should precede implementation to achieve lasting impact.
He acknowledged the numerous challenges facing governance but stressed that no economy can thrive without adequate security, particularly at territorial boundaries. Citing the Ondo-Ogun boundary dispute linked to oil resources, he said unresolved issues of this nature continue to hinder development.
“We must first get the fundamentals right before we can begin to talk about real benefits for our people,” he said, lamenting that poor representation has often allowed outsiders to benefit more from local resources than the indigenes.
Highlighting his achievements in office, Ajayi said he delivered key projects despite limited resources, including the construction of office spaces and strengthening community trust through consistent town hall engagements.
He further explained that his administration boosted internally generated revenue (IGR) by introducing a tenement rate system in collaboration with landlords. The revenue, he noted, was judiciously utilised to execute people-oriented projects.
“In one instance, we deployed up to 10 graders in a single day to rehabilitate motorable roads across communities, bringing relief to several Community Development Associations (CDAs),” he said.
Ajayi expressed confidence in his ability to replicate these achievements at the state level, noting that his administration also initiated the Ijako International Market to boost commerce and local economic growth. He pledged to deliver people-oriented legislation that will drive sustainable development across his constituency.
