Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has stepped down from his position with immediate effect.
According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Mr Abubakar tendered his resignation in a letter dated 1 December, citing health challenges. The letter was addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Mr Onanuga stated that President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed gratitude to the outgoing minister for his service to the country. He added that the president is expected to notify the Senate of a new nominee for the position later this week.
Abubakar, 63, previously served as the governor of Jigawa State for two terms, from 2015 to 2023. President Tinubu appointed him Defence Minister in August 2023.
His departure comes at a time when the president has declared a national security emergency, with further details set to be announced in due course.
