EMBER MONTHS: FRSC Enlightens Road Users and Public on Avoidance of Accident During This Period

It's another last quarter of the year, when  roads users and member of the public need to be sensitise to avoid all manner of dangers on the highways due to the peculiarities usually attached to the period with high rates of road crash occurrence otherwise tagged as Ember months.

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) usually take it upon itself to educate and call attention to the incidences of poor safety and security of lives and properties during these months.

In accordance with his  duties and responsibilities, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, CC Ahmed Umar has admonished motorists and other road users to imbibe safety cultures during and beyond the embers months.

He made the appeal while flagging off 2022 ember months campaign with the theme: “Avoid Speeding, Overloading and Unsafe Tyres to Arrive Alive” in Ota, the ancient city of Aworiland.

The event was organised in collaboration with Shell Nigeria Gas.

CC Umar disclosed that FRSC Ogun Command has recorded no fewer than 65 road traffic crashes from January to October within Ota and its environs.

Umar explained that 17 persons died, while 119 people were rescued from the 65 road crashes which occurred under the period reviewed, adding that 31 out of the 65 road crashes occurred at night.

He attributed most of the crashes to speed limit violation, drunk driving, fatigue and mechanical deficiencies.

“We are appealing to motorists to avoid speeding, overloading and refrain from using unsafe tyres to stem road crashes during, before and after the ember months.

“It is highly necessary for motorists and other road users to imbibe road safety cultures as ember months were always characterised with high vehicular and human movement.

“High level of human and vehicular movement are heightened because of social and religious activities. Therefore, there is need for motorists to always adhere strictly to stipulated speed limits.

Speaking at the event, FRSC Ota Unit Commander, ACC Akeem Ganiyu, said the aim of the campaign was to sensitise motorists and the general public on importance of safety, particularly during the last few months of the year.

Ganiyu noted that most of the road crashes were avoidable, in spite of any mythical spiritual perceptions, if all traffic rules and regulations were strictly obeyed.

The Unit Commander identified some major causes of road crashes to excessive speed, overloading, unsafe tyres, drunk driving and the use of mobile phones while driving.

He said human factors contributed 80 per cent of the recorded crashes.

“There is the need to re-orientate road users on safety and the dangers inherent on the road if the basic rules were violated,” he said.
