The Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government has commenced the sale of eggs to members of the public following the impressive performance of the first phase of its poultry project, which has achieved a 70 per cent hen-day egg production rate.
In a further demonstration of its commitment to agricultural development and food security, the Council has also commenced the second phase of the project with the installation of newly acquired battery cages and the brooding of a fresh batch of birds. The new batch comprises broilers for meat production and layers for commercial egg production.
Speaking on the development, the Head of the Department of Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Omidiji Ezekiel Abolade, disclosed that the first phase of the project recorded a remarkably low mortality rate of just 3 per cent.
He attributed this achievement to effective flock management, appropriate vaccination programmes and strict adherence to biosecurity measures, noting that these practices have contributed significantly to the successful performance of the poultry farm.
According to him, the commencement of egg sales is part of the Council's strategy to make fresh and affordable eggs readily accessible to residents while generating additional internally generated revenue (IGR) for the Local Government.
The progress and expansion of the initiative have been made possible through the unwavering support of the Executive Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, Hon. Lawal Adewale Wasiu, FCA, whose administration continues to prioritise agricultural development as a catalyst for economic growth, food security and job creation.
The poultry project is designed to boost local production of eggs and chicken meat, strengthen food security, create employment opportunities, empower youths and women through participation in agribusiness, and enhance the revenue base of the Council.
With the commencement of egg sales and the launch of the second phase, the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government is taking further practical steps towards building a sustainable agricultural sector and strengthening the local economy.
The Council, under the leadership of Hon. Lawal Adewale Wasiu, FCA, reiterates its commitment to initiatives that promote sustainable agriculture, increase food production, create employment and improve the economic well-being of residents.
