Ogun NUJ @50: Council, Nima Foundation Extend Humanitarian Outreach to Fijabi Village

By Ọmọsọla Olumide

FIJABI VILLAGE, Odeda, Ogun State — The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), in collaboration with NIMA Memorial Care Foundation, on Friday, October 30, 2026, extended its 50th-anniversary celebrations to Fijabi Village in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State through a humanitarian outreach programme aimed at supporting vulnerable residents.

The outreach, which formed part of Day Five of the week-long golden jubilee celebration, featured the distribution of clothing, footwear, school bags, household items and cash gifts to indigent individuals and families in the community.

The programme was organised in partnership with NIMA Memorial Care Foundation, founded by Alhaja Zainab Mohammed Abdulmalik, and its media outfit, led by veteran journalist Mr Lanre Ijaola, who has over 40 years of experience in journalism.

Speaking during the exercise, the Chairman of the Ogun State Council of the NUJ, Comrade Akinwale Olanrewaju, expressed appreciation to the residents of Fijabi Village for their warm reception of the visiting journalists and representatives of the foundation.

He explained that the initiative was designed to extend the benefits of the union's golden jubilee celebration beyond the journalism profession by providing practical assistance to less-privileged individuals and families.

Olanrewaju disclosed that the choice of Fijabi Village followed a donation of solar lights and a laptop to the Ogun NUJ State Council by Senator Saliu Afolabi.

According to him, the donation prompted the union to consider extending a humanitarian gesture to a community in Odeda Local Government Area, leading to the selection of Fijabi Village as a beneficiary through the collaborative efforts of the NUJ and NIMA Memorial Care Foundation.

He said the outreach reflected the union's commitment to community engagement, compassion and social responsibility.

New Clothes, Household Items Distributed

The NUJ chairman explained that the relief materials distributed during the exercise included clothing for children and adults, shoes, bags, dolls and games. Other items, including blankets, pillows and disposable nappies, were also provided to support vulnerable residents, particularly bedridden individuals and those requiring additional care.

He emphasised that the clothing items were new and had been shipped from abroad by the foundation to support the beneficiaries.

“We didn't bring you used clothes. Everything you see here was newly shipped from abroad by NIMA Foundation,” Olanrewaju said.

The distribution generated excitement among residents, many of whom expressed gratitude to the organisers through prayers, songs and joyful celebrations.

Foundation Reaffirms Commitment to Vulnerable Communities

In her remarks, the founder of NIMA Memorial Care Foundation, Alhaja Zainab Mohammed Abdulmalik, reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to improving the welfare of vulnerable people through compassion, dignity and sustainable humanitarian support.

She explained that the foundation was established to provide essential care, quality education and lasting support for orphaned children, underprivileged families and marginalised communities.

According to her, the foundation pursues its mission through initiatives that promote access to clean water, health and hygiene, clothing distribution and educational sponsorship.

She added that the programmes were designed to create sustainable pathways out of poverty, encourage self-reliance and enable beneficiaries to live with dignity.

As part of the outreach, Abdulmalik offered prayers for the community and distributed cash gifts to some residents, providing additional financial assistance alongside the donated relief materials.

Odeda Council Leader, Residents Commend Organisers

The councillor representing Opeji Ward and Leader of the House of Odeda Local Government, Hon. Rotimi Adeyemi, who spoke on behalf of the local government and the Fijabi community, commended the Ogun NUJ and NIMA Memorial Care Foundation for extending their humanitarian intervention to the village.

Adeyemi said the residents were delighted with the gesture and had warmly received the donated materials.

He described the initiative as a demonstration of compassion and solidarity with rural communities, many of whose residents face significant socioeconomic challenges.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr Durojaye David, also expressed appreciation to the organisers, noting that the outreach had brought happiness to residents despite the economic difficulties confronting many households.

He said the donated clothes and other essential items would be beneficial to residents who needed them, adding that the gesture had given members of the community renewed reasons to smile.

The outreach highlighted the importance of partnerships between professional organisations and charitable foundations in reaching underserved communities and improving the welfare of vulnerable people

It also added a humanitarian dimension to the Ogun NUJ @50 celebrations, underscoring the union's commitment to social responsibility and community development beyond its core mandate of promoting professional journalism.

NUJ Members Offer Thanksgiving Prayers at Fijabi Central Mosque

Following the humanitarian outreach, members of the NUJ Ogun State Council, led by Comrade Akinwale Olanrewaju, proceeded to Fijabi Central Mosque to offer prayers of thanksgiving to Almighty Allah in commemoration of the union's 50th anniversary.

The visit provided an opportunity for members to express gratitude to Allah for His guidance, protection and faithfulness throughout the union's 50-year journey.

They also prayed for continued divine grace, wisdom, strength and abundant blessings for the union's leadership as it continues to steer the affairs of the council towards greater achievements in the years ahead.

The thanksgiving visit brought a spiritual dimension to the day's activities, rounding off the humanitarian exercise with prayers for the continued progress of the union and the welfare of its members.
