OTA, Ogun State — The Olota of Ota, His Royal Majesty Ọba Professor Adeyemi AbdulKabir Obalanlege, Lanlege Ekun II, has charged the newly elected executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun West Independent Chapel, to uphold objectivity, fairness and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
The monarch gave the charge on Monday, September 28, 2026, when the newly elected executives, led by the Chapel Chairman, Comrade Olatunji Egbewunmi, paid him a courtesy visit at his palace in Ota.
Egbewunmi, while speaking during the visit, expressed the chapel’s appreciation to the monarch for his consistent support for journalists and his fatherly role as the Grand Patron of the chapel.
He said the visit was also to formally introduce the newly elected executive to the monarch, appreciate him for his support and seek his continued guidance and encouragement throughout their tenure.
Responding, the Olota urged the new leadership to make accuracy, fairness and objectivity the foundation of its journalistic practice, stressing the need for responsible and professional reportage.
Olota also called on the NUJ to intensify efforts to curb quackery in journalism and ensure that professional standards are strictly maintained.
The monarch noted that journalism plays a vital role in society, particularly in creating awareness and keeping the public informed, adding that major events would be incomplete without the presence of the media.
He urged the new executives to distinguish themselves through authentic journalism anchored on fairness, objectivity and credibility.
In a gesture aimed at strengthening the relationship between the traditional institution and the media, the Olota promised to henceforth involve the NUJ in activities and programmes organised by the palace, stressing the importance of collaboration with professional journalists in promoting awareness and disseminating information about palace activities.
The monarch further encouraged the executives to remain committed to their responsibilities, assuring them that their good work and professionalism would ultimately speak for them.
The courtesy visit was attended by members of the newly elected Ogun West Independent Chapel executive and members of the Electoral Committee.
