OTA, Ogun State — The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, Comrade Akinwale Olanrewaju, has congratulated the newly elected executives of the Ogun West Independent Chapel, urging them to lead with humility, accountability, discipline and respect for senior members.
Olanrewaju spoke during the chapel’s election of officers, held at the Recreation Centre, Ilo-Awela, Ota. He also charged members to remain united and work collectively towards the growth and development of the union.
He commended members for their commitment, cooperation and contributions to strengthening the chapel, stressing that unity, mutual respect and professional solidarity were critical to the success of the NUJ.
The NUJ chairman particularly praised the immediate past Caretaker Chairman of the chapel, Comrade Kayode Taiwo, for his efforts to promote unity and sustain the ideals of the union during his tenure.
He urged members to set aside personal interests and differences, noting that the strength of the union depended largely on their willingness to support one another and uphold the ethics and principles of journalism.
Olanrewaju further called on members to respect constituted authority and recognise the responsibilities attached to every elected position within the union.
While congratulating the newly elected officers, he cautioned them against allowing their positions to create a sense of superiority over other members.
According to him, leadership in the NUJ should be regarded as an opportunity to serve rather than an avenue to exercise authority over colleagues.
He charged the new executives to demonstrate transparency, humility, discipline and accountability, while maintaining cordial relationships with members and drawing on the experience and guidance of senior colleagues.
Olanrewaju stressed that effective leadership required patience, understanding and a willingness to listen to members’ concerns.
He also encouraged associate members to take the necessary steps to upgrade their membership status to full membership of the NUJ, describing the process as important for greater participation in the union’s activities and responsibilities.
The chairman clarified that membership revalidation was a continuous exercise and urged members to keep their records up to date.
He said regular revalidation would help maintain an accurate membership register, strengthen the credibility of the chapel and ensure that members remained properly recognised within the union.
The Ogun NUJ chairman thereafter ratified Comrade Olatunji Egbewunmi as Chairman, Comrade Gbenga Fashina as Secretary, and Comrade Sunday Adeyemi as Treasurer of the Ogun West Independent Chapel.
He urged the new executives to justify the confidence reposed in them by working transparently and prioritising the welfare and professional advancement of members.
Olanrewaju also called on members to give the new leadership the necessary cooperation and support, stressing that the development of the chapel was a collective responsibility.
He expressed optimism that greater cooperation, respect for constituted authority and renewed commitment to the ideals of the NUJ would further strengthen the Ogun West Independent Chapel and enhance its contribution to journalism practice in Ogun State.
Egbewunmi Pledges Commitment to Members’ Welfare
Responding, the newly elected Chairman of the Ogun West Independent Chapel, Comrade Olatunji Egbewunmi, thanked members for the confidence reposed in him and for their support throughout the electoral process.
Egbewunmi commended members for their cooperation and commitment to ensuring a peaceful and successful election, describing the exercise as a demonstration of unity and collective determination to move the chapel forward.
He pledged that the welfare, professional development and general interests of members would remain central to his administration.
The new chairman assured members that his administration would be inclusive and consultative, promising to work with all stakeholders to strengthen the chapel and advance the interests of its members.
Taiwo Urges Members to Uphold Professionalism
Also speaking, the outgoing Caretaker Chairman of the chapel, Comrade Kayode Taiwo, urged members to sustain the spirit of cooperation and continue working together for the growth and development of the Ogun West Independent Chapel.
Taiwo charged members to uphold the ethics and principles of journalism in both their professional and union activities, emphasising professionalism, responsibility, integrity and mutual respect.
He encouraged members to remain committed to the ideals of the NUJ and collectively protect the dignity, credibility and reputation of the journalism profession.
