SANGO-OTA, Ogun State— No fewer than 11 vehicles were involved in a multiple road traffic crash at the Sango-Ota Tollgate end of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Ogun State, on Tuesday night.
The accident, which occurred at about 10pm, reportedly happened when a Mercedes-Benz truck descending towards Lagos lost control after its brakes allegedly failed.
The truck was said to have been descending the slope around the former Shoprite area when the driver reportedly lost control, causing it to crash into several vehicles.
The incident triggered panic among motorists and passengers, with many fleeing the scene to avoid being caught in the chain collision.
Preliminary information obtained from first responders, including the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), indicated that the vehicles involved were:

An account from the Ota Divisional Command described the incident as a serious multiple road traffic accident.”
According to an eyewitness cited by the command, the Mercedes-Benz truck was travelling inward Lagos when it reportedly lost control, resulting in the multiple collision.
Two persons, a male and a female, were reportedly injured in the crash, while several others narrowly escaped.
Many of the vehicles involved had been evacuated from the scene as of the time of filing this report, allowing traffic to resume normal flow.
However, the containerised truck remained at the scene pending the arrival of a crane for its removal. The Ford Transit was also reportedly trapped and was expected to be evacuated after the truck was removed.
Recurring danger spot
The Sango-Ota Tollgate axis has recorded several road crashes in the past, some of which resulted in fatalities.
Although the Ogun State Government and relevant traffic management agencies have taken measures to improve traffic flow and safety in the area, traffic violations by some commercial drivers and motorcycle operators remain a concern.
Motorists have particularly complained about congestion around the exit point from Ilo-Awela towards Tollgate, where vehicles and motorcycles sometimes obstruct traffic and make it difficult for motorists joining the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway to proceed smoothly towards Lagos.
Authorities and road users are therefore expected to intensify efforts to improve compliance with traffic regulations and prevent further crashes along the busy corridor.
