LAGOS — Key government officials and private-sector stakeholders in Nigeria’s maritime sector have been invited to the official unveiling of a landmark initiative aimed at tackling pollution and improving the sustainability of the nation’s inland waterways.
The unveiling is scheduled for Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Bic Garden, Lagos.
The initiative, developed by the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) in collaboration with Parts Central Limited, was conceived under the leadership of NIWA’s immediate past Managing Director, Asiwaju Bola Oyebamiji.
The comprehensive environmental programme is designed to identify major sources of pollution and curb the indiscriminate disposal of waste across Nigeria’s inland waterways.
It will introduce structured systems for removing waste and converting it into economic value, thereby promoting environmental sustainability while creating employment and livelihood opportunities for communities along the waterways.
Beyond improving navigability through the removal of debris and other pollution-related obstructions, the nationwide initiative is expected to support the conservation of aquatic biodiversity, including species that remain largely undocumented, while contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s fisheries sector.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola, has consistently advocated the strategic utilisation of Nigeria’s vast inland waterways beyond transportation, positioning them as critical drivers of economic diversification under the Federal Government’s blue economy agenda.
The official unveiling further demonstrates NIWA’s commitment to innovation, environmental sustainability and economic development, building on initiatives strengthened during the tenure of Oyebamiji, who is now the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Candidate in Osun State.
In a joint statement, NIWA Lagos Area Manager, Engr. Sarat Braimah, and Managing Director of Parts Central Limited, Henry Olaoluwa Onifade, said the Lagos unveiling is aimed at sensitising stakeholders to the benefits of the initiative and securing their support and active participation in its implementation.
