President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named Reno Omokri, former Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, as one of Nigeria’s new ambassadors.
The appointment appeared in a fresh list of 32 ambassadorial nominees forwarded to the Senate for confirmation. This second batch follows an earlier submission of three nominees.
According to the president’s media office, the expanded list includes several prominent figures such as a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), former Aviation Minister Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, former Enugu Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and Ambassador Ahmed Mohammed Monguno, among others.
Reno’s journey from outspoken critic to Tinubu supporter
Reno Omokri, born January 22, 1974, in Warri, Delta State, holds a law degree and a Master of Laws from the University of Wolverhampton. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2000 and served as Special Assistant on New Media to President Jonathan from 2011 to 2015.
Now a prominent social media figure with over five million followers, Omokri was once a vocal critic of President Tinubu. He later shifted his position, citing access to new evidence and renewed personal trust.
In a March appearance on Breakfast Central, he remarked on Nigeria’s tendency toward short public memory, adding that his previous concerns focused on Tinubu’s academic records and alleged drug-related controversies.
He explained that a personal fact-finding trip to Chicago State University in September 2022 changed his stance:
“I met with individuals there; I was given overwhelming evidence that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu attended, passed his exams, and graduated from Chicago State University. After that date, I changed completely.”
