President MotorCycle Operators Union of Nigeria (MOUN) and Chairman Riders owner of Motor Cycle Organistion, (ROMO)) Borokini of both Awori and Ẹ̀gbá land, Hon. Dr. Abdul Rasak Olùṣọ́la Sotayo AKA Solebo made this statement during a courtesy call by NUJ Independent Online Chapel Ota, in his house at Iju, ota Ogun state on Monday.
Solebo who was so delighted in receiving the NUJ Members to his house, said journalists could easily make or mar anybody but also serve as the watchdog of the society and the nation as a whole, whom should be accorded their maximum respect. Adding that, journalists create awareness, inform and publicise both the good and bad of Individuals in the society and also act as activists where needed for the betterment of nation building.
However, he said association is quite different from the union, adding that combination of many associations form a union. Saying that, for a union to exist and recognise in Nigeria , it must have been approved by Ministry of Labor and Trade as either as member of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) or Trade Union Congress (NUC). Having said this, he said MOUN is the combination of various Motor Cycle associations coming together and are recognised by the existing law approved by Federal Government of Nigeria.
He also mentioned many benefits accruing to its members since inception which include, empowerment of members through loan purchase of motorcycles and assisting in payment of such loan purchases, training and retraining of members, insurance scheme provision and effort in curbing drinking riders while riding, fighting for members course and avoid any form of cheating coming their way.
The Chairman of the NUJ Ota, Comrade Kayode Taiwo in his remarks, said the courtesy visit is essential to create awareness of the union existence in Ota and its environ. Therefore to differentiate between journalists and bloggers including social media influentials, who abused the work of journalists due to their lack of knowledge of journalism, reporting and misinformation in order to gain followers. Adding that NUJ Ota, has come to stay to correct all these junk journalism and misinformation.
He thanked the president of MOUN for receiving the members and assured him of adequate, factual, objective news reportage and balancing through investigating journalism.
