President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered that the proposed N8000 conditional cash transfer to Nigerians to cushion the fuel subsidy removal’s effect be immediately reviewed.
This was made known in a statement issued on Tuesday night, by Dele Alake, special adviser on special duties, communications and strategy.
He said Tinubu also directed that the whole gamut of the palliative package of government be unveiled to Nigerians.
“That the N8,000 conditional cash transfer programme envisaged to bring succour to most vulnerable households be reviewed immediately. This is in deference to the views expressed by Nigerians against it,” the statement reads.
On July 13, Tinubu disclosed a plan by the Federal Government to transfer N8,000 to 12 million poor households in Nigeria for a period of six months.
According to the President, the money transfer to poor households would have a multiplier effect on about 60 million individuals.
For credibility, the President said the money will be transferred to the households digitally.
This was ever greeted with heavy criticism with many saying the amount is too small to provide succor while others said it will only enrich the elites as it will not reach the people it was meant for.
