The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a devastating road traffic accident involving a heavily loaded 40-foot containerized truck at Second Rainbow inward Oshodi, along the service lane near the Police Tactical Team Station.
The tragic incident occurred after the driver reportedly lost control of the articulated truck while in motion. The massive vehicle overturned onto a commercial mini shuttle bus and rammed into nearby roadside shops and business outlets.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck, carrying a fully loaded 40-foot container, veered off its lane before crashing into the busy commercial area.
Sadly, a female Point of Sale (POS) operator working under a roadside canopy sustained severe injuries to both legs, triggering panic among traders and residents in the area.
The injured victim was immediately rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention by officers of the Police Tactical Team stationed nearby.
Following the incident, LASTMA officials swiftly mobilized to the scene to manage traffic, secure the area, and coordinate rescue and recovery efforts alongside security agencies and emergency responders.
The truck driver was promptly apprehended by LASTMA operatives and handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution.
To restore normal traffic flow, recovery teams deployed a tow truck to evacuate the overturned articulated vehicle and the damaged mini bus, while officers from the Orile-Iganmu Police Division commenced documentation and preliminary investigations into the incident.
Despite the scale of the accident and the damage recorded, vehicular movement around the corridor remained largely uninterrupted due to the timely intervention and effective traffic management strategy implemented by LASTMA officials.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reiterated the agency’s appeal to operators of articulated vehicles, fleet managers, and logistics companies to ensure thorough mechanical inspections of heavy-duty trucks before embarking on journeys, especially regarding braking systems and other critical safety components.
Bakare-Oki stressed that poor vehicle maintenance remains a major threat to human lives, public infrastructure, and road safety across Lagos State, urging transport stakeholders to strictly adhere to established safety standards and operational discipline.
